Review:

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

Format (That I Read It):

Book/Audiobook

Summary:

This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do.

This afternoon, her planet was invaded.

The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to fight their way onto an evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.
But their problems are just getting started. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet's AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a tangled web of data to find the truth, it's clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: the ex-boyfriend she swore she'd never speak to again.

Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents—including emails, schematics, military files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more—Illuminae is the first book in a heart-stopping, high-octane trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes.

Initial Thoughts:

I first heard about this book way back when people on Booktube were getting ARCs (Advance Reader's Copies) many months ago. I didn't know much about it because all people wanted to talk about was how cool the book looked. I can't blame them. The book is very original, My initial thought was this book was a murder mystery sort of book because it's called the Illuminae Files but when I saw that it was Sci-Fi I was ecstatic. Science fiction has become a new fascination for me.

Review:

Illuminae is probably the most unique book I've ever gotten. Not only is the dust jacket (on and off) beautiful but the pages are an adventure too. Let me start off by saying I read only a small part of this novel. When I started reading this novel I felt a reading slump coming on. I was also adamant on finishing my Goodreads reading goal so I took a step back. I decided the best way to get through the book was to listen to the audiobook instead. That was the best decision I think I've made all year. The audiobook is as unique as the physical one. There are so many sound effects and the voices are all different for each character.

The book itself is one of the best books I read in 2015. Kady is such a badass character. She is going to end up being one of those heroines like Katniss, Hermione, and Tris. She was very brave despite all the intense situations she was put into, and doing it all with sarcasm. I loved that she was a hacker, I think that was an interesting aspect that you don't see much of in YA, at least, I don't. Ezra too was brave, but he was a comic relief. And then the most interesting character, in my opinion, was AIDAN, the artificial intelligence of the fleet. AIDAN was the most complex. AIDAN is a computer but by the end of the story, I couldn't help but think of he/she/it as a person. AIDAN really grew on me. When the Alexander got nuked I couldn't help but be really sad that AIDAN wouldn't exist. As it turns out at the end of the novel we get a hint that maybe the artificial intelligence may have survived thanks to Kady. I liked the little set-up for the next book in the series. I can't wait to see what the next novel has in store.
